By observing:

 The change in color: Pay attention to the carved areas to find if the color in these areas is different or not. If the color is the same as the other areas, it is real gold. If the color is different (dark, black or blue), it is fake gold.
The surface of gold: Use magnifying glass to observe. If the surface has wrinkle or small dots, gold is fake.
By biting
You can know if gold is real or not by biting. You should bite it not too strongly and not too lightly. After that, observe the bitten area. Real gold is concave. Fake one remains the same without any concave area because it is tougher than real gold.
Distinguish real and fake gold based on weight
This is a very simple way. Gold's weight is counted by gram. You can ask the jeweler to know your gold's weight. Put gold into a tube of water which has volume measurement to figure out gold's volume.
Formula to figure out proportion: Weight/volume. Real gold's proportion is approximately 19g/ml.
For example: The gold's weight is 40g and its volume is 2ml. Its proportion is 20g/ml (40:2). We can confirm that this is real gold.
Below are proportions of some kinds of gold:
  • 22K : 17,7-17,8 g/ml
  • 18K (white gold) : 14,7-16,9 g/ml
  • 18K : 15,2-15,9 g/ml
  • 14K : 12,9-14,6 g/ml
By using pottery
Use a piece of pottery to distinguish real from fake gold: Rub gold on the ceramic surface. Fake gold turns black. Real gold stay the same.
By using nitric acid
Put gold in a box which contain stainless steel. Then, pour some drops of nitric acid on. Real gold turns brown or remain the original color. Fake gold becomes green or blue.
